These inline six-cylinder engines offer the latest generation of engine management and injection systems to produce highly efficient outputs. Generous torque is developed low down the rev range, resulting in easy driveability.
There are four Euro 4 variants (340, 380, 420 and 480 hp) that will meet the needs of the vast majority of coach operators.
340 Euro 4
340 12-litre: 340 hp (250 kW) at 1800 r/min
1700 Nm between 1100 and 1350 r/min
380 Euro 4
380 12-litre: 380 hp (280 kW) at 1800 r/min
1900 Nm between 1100 and 1350 r/min
420 Euro 4
420 12-litre: 420 hp (309 kW) at 1900 r/min
2100 Nm between 1100 and 1350 r/min
480 Euro 4
480 12-litre: 480 hp (353 kW) at 1900 r/min
2250 Nm between 1100 and 1450 r/min
A special feature of all these engines is Scania HPI. Clean and efficient outputs are ensured by the adoption of refined technology known as Time Pressure Metering.
This advanced system allows constantly and infinitely variable minor adjustments to both timing of injection and volume of fuel used, resulting in consistently efficient performance. Refinement of the system is also exhibited by lower noise levels.
The 480 hp and 420 hp Euro-4 engines have the added benefit of Scania Turbocompounding. Here, a second turbocharger extracts yet more energy from exhaust gases to give a greater boost by adding momentum at the flywheel to enhance performance and economy.
Transmission options for the 12-litre series
340 – Fuel-saving 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission and 8-speed manual transmission.
380 – 8-speed manual transmission.
420 and 480 – A 12-speed with built-in Scania Opticruise for automated gearchanges.
