Young European Truck Driver
This is Young European Truck Driver 2005

Welcome to Young European Truck Driver 2005. For the second year now, Scania is organising this highly appreciated competition for young truck drivers. This year, drivers from 27 European countries will test their expertise regarding safe and skillful truck driving.

In this competition, the driver is truly in focus – in fact he or she is right in the driver’s seat. The driver is by far the most important player in the transport operation. A skilled and well-trained driver has a greater chance of avoiding accidents and thus saving lives, at the same time as less fuel is consumed and maintenance costs for the haulage company are reduced. A good driving style also contributes to more uniform flow of traffic, and thus also a reduction in global fuel consumption and emissions.

Drivers of heavy trucks born in 1970 or later can take part in the competition. Local qualifying rounds will take place during spring 2005 at Scania dealerships throughout Europe.  Practical tests such as precision manoeuvring and economical driving are included, as well as theoretical tests about regulations and safety issues.

The national finals will be followed by the European finals featuring the winners from all the various countries, to be held at Scania’s head office in Södertälje 17 September 2005. The various European winners of Young European Truck Driver 2003 have guaranteed entry to the 2005 national finals, and the 2003 European champion, Michele Sandri of Italy, has a guaranteed place in the 2005 European finals.

The Young European Truck Driver (YETD) competition is yet another step in Scania’s long-term drive to improve traffic safety and the status of professional drivers. It also fits in well with the European Commission’s safety target of halving the number of traffic fatalities by 2010.
