The competition includes theoretical and practical tests according to the European Union directives on compulsory driver training. The Young European Truck Driver competition 2005 was supported by the European Commission and IRU (International Road Transport Union). Sponsors of Young European Truck Driver 2005 were Michelin and Shell.

“A natural talent” was one comment about Laurens D’Huyvetter, who won the Young European Truck Driver 2005 final. At YETD 2003 he came in second, which probably spurred him to the bit of extra effort needed in this year’s tough field of national finalists.

The winner of the Scania Professional Driver Competition 2005 in Taiwan was Mr. Chaing Han-Ben. He won at trip to Scania testing his dream King of the road Scania R580.

The winner of the Argentine road safety competition “Mejor Conductor de Camiones de Argentina” Tulio Soloreski challenged his fellow finalists for the 2007 title from the winner's platform.

Late in September 2005 12 national finalists gathered to battle for the title Best Brazilian Truck Driver - which turned out to be Marcos Antonio Simioni.
