Scania Driver Support – a tool for reducing fuel consumption

Intuitive and easy to use, the Scania Driver Support system coaches drivers in real time with hints and feedback about driving style.

Scania Driver Support is a standard feature on all long-haulage vehicles with retarder, EBS and range-splitter gearboxes. It is optional for the driver to use. When selected it is displayed on the dashboard between the engine revs and speed dials.

Tests have shown that using the Scania Driver Support system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 11 percent. It was designed to extend the positive effects of driver training courses where drivers otherwise often went back to their bad habits.

The system works by measuring four different aspects of driving – hill driving, brake use, choice of gears, and anticipation. The driver’s ‘score’ is continuously displayed in percent for each category.
The driver can also choose to see a total score including all four categories, for example after completing a trip.

“Reaching a 100 percent is very hard. Most people do something wrong some of the time. But 60 to 70 percent should be within reach if you just follow the instructions,” says Jonny Andersson, the development engineer behind Scania Driver Support.
