A lasting commitment to road safety

Economic growth generates increased transport volumes, and efficient transports are a precondition for sustainable economic growth. For Scania as a manufacturer of heavy vehicles it is crucial to have a well functioning transport system. In order to guarantee a sustainable and efficient transport system its unwanted side effects must be handled. Therefore, road safety is one of Scania’s main priorities. The commitment to improved road safety is part of Scania’s heritage, strategy and brand image.

In the driver’s seat
Road safety can be influenced and improved by many different factors. The vehicle, infrastructure and driver are at the top of the list. However, road safety is not primarily about advanced infrastructure or vehicle design. It is a matter of human behaviour and attitudes.

Humans make mistakes and we have to work to accommodate their weaknesses. Scania firmly believes that the driver is the single most important actor for improving road safety. To focus on the driver doesn’t mean that he or she has the sole responsibility for maintaining a high level of road safety. This focus is kept in mind already during Scania’s development work, making sure that the product does the utmost to support the driver in making the right decisions behind the wheel. It also means that Scania takes initiatives to influence human behaviour such as offering driver training.

Scania initiatives that influence human behaviour

Young European Truck Driver
Scania arranges the Young European Truck Driver competition. 13 000 drivers from all EU Member States as well as Norway, Switzerland and Turkey took part in 2005 to test their expertise in safe and skilful truck driving.

Driver Training
Scania offers driver training in a number of markets around the world. The purpose of the training is to improve road safety by influencing driver behaviour, which also leads to more fuel-efficient driving and less vehicle wear, i.e. lower operating costs for the transport company.

A global concern
Every year close to 1.3 million people are killed in road accidents. This makes road accidents one of the world’s main health problems. Therefore, road safety has been elevated to a top priority on the global political agenda. Scania cooperates with WHO to improve road safety around the world. With Scania’s support WHO will have access to the company’s experts and global market network.
