In this way, many hazardous and unsuitable substances have been replaced by more resource-efficient and cleaner alternatives.

Raw material and chemical use

A vehicle consists mainly of raw materials such as steel, cast iron and aluminium. Oil, cutting fluid, degreasing agents, paint and rust-proofing agents are also used during the manufacturing process. Therefore, the use of materials and chemicals was recognised early on as a key environmental performance issue at Scania.
There is an unceasing effort to use raw materials and chemicals more efficiently within the Scania production system. For instance, improvements are being achieved by developing and implementing new processes.
In the wake of a trend of decreasing material use, it has proven more difficult to cut material usage rates still further. Rational raw material consumption is in many cases dependent on production volumes. The difficulty in decreasing material consumption therefore stems from the lower production volumes of recent years.
