Scania XPI – the fuel injection system of the future
Scania XPI – for extra high-pressure injection – paves the way for emission levels beyond what is possible with today’s diesel technology. The new high-pressure injection system is being developed jointly with US engine manufacturer Cummins. Scania XPI enables Scania to focus on offering the best possible operating economy, while leading the market in environmental concern, performance and driveability.

  Emissions

It is vital for Scania to further reduce emissions with the best possible fuel economy, without losing the edge in driveability. Scania’s modular engines optimise exhaust emission levels for carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.

Refining diesel technology for lower exhaust emissions and optimised fuel economy is an important success story for Scania. Fuel consumption has been maintained or even improved when progressing from Euro 1 to Euro 4. Scania’s objective is to offer the best possible combination of fuel economy and environmental characteristics.

Scania has always believed that the best way to control emissions is to control combustion – i.e. at source, inside the combustion chamber. The cleaner the combustion process, the better the result – because it is always better to have less to clean up afterwards.

EU emission limits
The EU is constantly working to improve air quality. One measure taken is the stipulation of emission limits for heavy vehicles. Over the years, exhaust emission legislation has been and is continuing to be successively tightened.

Substances in focus
Developing combustion technology is largely about finding a reasonable balance between fuel consumption (CO2) and the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx). This requires combustion to be precisely controlled at relatively low temperatures. This is the only way to reduce NOx emissions during combustion.
