Scania on the environment

Scania strives to minimise the environmental impact of its products, both during manufacture and during use. We do this by taking into account the environmental effects throughout the entire life-cycle of our trucks, buses and engines.

Scania operates manufacturing and assembling facilities on several continents, and the company’s products are used throughout the world. Therefore, we take into account the environmental impact caused by our production as well as the use of our products.

Our ambition is to minimise the effects on the environment – it is the many small steps that carry Scania’s environmental commitment forward.

To see a product from a life-cycle perspective is to do the right things correctly and at the right moment. The Scania product concept and production system are characterised by the underlying concepts of resource efficiency and the principle of caution. Environmental work thus focuses on economising resources and energy as well as on highlighting customer demands in terms of low fuel consumption and low emissions.

In order to structure its environmental work, Scania works with, and is certified according to, the ISO 14001 standard. The Scania environmental policy and environmental objectives apply to all the company’s activities.

Scania strives to optimise economical and environmental performance from the earliest stages o research and development, right up to final end-of-life treatment. Scania strives to continuously streamline its resource usage while minimising emissions and residual products from the manufacturing process. This also includes the efforts undertaken by our suppliers through their environmental work. Scania helps its customer choose the right vehicle for a given transport need. By having the right vehicle, fuel and wear are saved. Scania also provides support in terms of driver training and maintenance programmes. Properly performed service is important in preserving a vehicle’s environmental characteristic. More than 1500 Scania service points around the world take care of this. Scania works consistently towards responsible handling of vehicles when they come to the end of their working lives. Detailed dismantling information is provided and the various components and materials are clearly marked to aid recycling. Scania takes environmental aspects into account from the development stage. Lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, the avoidance and phasing out of hazardous substances, and preconditions for end-of-life treatment are always in focus.
